FOOD STAMPS

As committed disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ, the people of Saint Patrick's parish respond to His mandate to "feed the hungry". In our parish's many social service programs, we witness our commitment to share with those in need within the parish and throughout the local community. Although currently only a vision, our project to establish and operate a Food Center is steadily moving forward.

We can also minimize hunger by serving as advocates for those who need help. One such way is to provide information on public food assistance programs.

The Food Stamp Program is the first line of defense against hunger. Many people don't think that they can get food stamps. You don't have to be welfare to get food stamp benefits. And you may be eligible even if you are working. It all depends on your income, the money you have saved, and how many people live with you. If you meet certain guidelines, you can get food stamps.

When you get food stamp benefits, you will be given an account, like a bank account. Each month, your food stamp benefits will be put into your account. To use your food stamp benefits, you will get an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card which you use like an ATM or credit card. The EBT card helps maintain your privacy. You can use your EBT card at grocery stores, convenience stores, markets and co-ops. You use it in the same way anyone would buy food with an ATM or credit card.

To apply for food stamp benefits, you will need to fill out an application that can be obtained locally at the Massachusetts Department of Transitional Assistance Office, 15 Union Street, Lawrence. Their telephone number is (978) 725-7100, and their hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.

The Massachusetts Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Nutrition Program (WIC) is a health, nutrition and prevention program. WIC benefits are for pregnant women, mothers with infants, and certain children under 5. WIC participants receive checks for nutritious foods, such as milk, cheese, fruit juices, iron-fortified cereals, peanut butter, dried beans and eggs. For more information about participating in WIC, you should call 1-800-WIC-1007.
